Homeowners help deputies find escaped inmate
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An inmate who was about to be booked on a robbery charge decided to make a run for it.
Marion County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man behind a home after he escaped the arrestee processing center downtown. He was found in an alley near Highland and Ninth Street.
A spokesperson with the MCSO said they’re investigating to learn how the inmate, Johnny Gamill, escaped.
All IMPD was willing to say was that he hopped a fence at the APC. Based on where he was found, it appears he started heading northeast.
Several homeowners said they saw Gamill first riding a bike while being chased by deputies.
They said he then started running through yards, breaking a gate along the way.
One neighbor ran outside because of the all the commotion – and accidentally came upon Gamill hiding in a window well.
The neighbor said Gamill immediately took off through the yard and they started calling out for police.
“By the time we got out here, there was one or two officers right in this area and we thought he had gone (down the alley). My son-in-law looked down and he was right behind those garbage cans,” he said pointing at the cans behind his house.
24-Hour News 8 found a man who claims it was his bike that Gamill stole during his escape but the bike owner preferred not to talk on camera.
As Gamill ran through the yard, he left a gate open causing a pet owner’s dog to run out. She went missing at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The dog’s name is Bianca. She is an 18 pound Black Scottish Terrier. Her owners said she has a collar with her name and two phone numbers on it.
No word yet on if Gamill will face additional charges for escaping.
