IDEM offering free ground water testing

INDIANAPOLIS (WLFI) – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is offering Hoosiers a chance to have their wells tested free of charge during IDEM’s 2015 Ground Water Assessment Survey.

IDEM is conducting the survey to look for contaminants in drinking water wells. Officials said they are in need of more residents to take part. The more residents who participate, the more information will be available.

The agency said it will use the data collected to “build a story” about ground water quality in the state. IDEM said the goal is to evaluate ground water quality in different regions based on factors such as geology, depth to water, depth of the well and land use.

IDEM said these assessments will allow them to be better able to protect the ground water resource, determine how ground water may affect the quality of surface water, and evaluate changes in ground water over time.

Residents can benefit as well by learning exactly what is in their water. If a problem is found, IDEM will provide the resident with information on how to reduce potential harmful chemicals in their water.
