Marion County sheriff’s reserve officer charged with OWI

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Marion County sheriff’s reserve officer has been charged with OWI after he was found sleeping in his personal sport-utility vehicle in a parking lot on the city’s east side.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in an media summary report that Sgt. Donald VanCleave was found about 8:55 p.m. Thursday at the entrance to the BP gas station and McDonald’s restaurant parking lot off an access road between Emerson Avenue and East 25th Street.

The report redacted the name of the owner of the 2008 Cadillac Escalade, but sheriff’s office spokeswoman Katie Carlson said it was not a sheriff’s vehicle.

Carlson said VanCleave has been placed on administrative leave. Reserve officers are not paid for their work.

A jail book-in photo of VanCleave was not immediately available from IMPD, and Carlson was unable to provided it.

A preliminary breath test found a blood-alcohol count of 0.161, the summary report said, and VanCleave submitted to a blood draw, although those results were not in the report.

He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated about 9 p.m.

The report said 13 IMPD officers and one sheriff’s office captain responded to the incident.
