Mother says terminally ill son was exposed to measles at California hospital

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (WISH/CNN) — A mother says her terminally ill son was exposed to measles at a hospital in California.

Rayna Souza tells KTXL that her son Jackson was exposed to measles at UC Davis Medical Center in March.

Her son, seven-year-old Jackson, was diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis at four-months-old.

He has about 100 small tumors and several large ones on his brain, according to KTXL.

Souza says her son began having seizures on March 17, so she took him to the medical center. Days later, she says doctors told her that Jackson was exposed to measles while he was there.

“When I found out I was mortified. My son’s already terminal,” Souza said. “I don’t have any area to risk any potential anything with him. I’m just like walking around him with a plastic bubble, just trying to keep him here as long as I can.”

She says doctors told her an unvaccinated child was the source. She said doctors told her that the girl contracted measles while overseas.

“People making irresponsible decisions for their family and their child really need to look and see how that could affect other people,” Souza said. “Because I still could lose my son.”

However, a doctor at the medical center doesn’t believe Jackson has measles.

“It was less than an hour separation between them,” said Dr. Dean Blumberg, Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at UC Davis Medical Center. “So there was potentially still measles virus in the air.”

Despite what Blumberg says, Souza says she has seen symptoms with Jackson.
