Police respond to 6 homicides over 24 hours in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police investigated the homicides of six people over a span of 24 hours in Indianapolis. A 17-year-old was among the victims. 

Here’s what we know about each shooting.

9:30 p.m. Sunday | Tuxedo Street

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 1000 block of North Tuxedo Street, between Rural Street and Sherman Drive, around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot.

A 21-year-old man had been walking down the sidewalk when he was killed, according to Lt. Kerry Buckner with IMPD.

People in the area had called to report gunshots. Police initially did not confirm the incident was a shooting but on Monday said it was a shooting.

No suspects had been identified by police on Sunday night. 

UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, the victim was identified as Tony Mason.

3 p.m. Sunday | Franklin Road 

Police were called to the intersection of 34th Street and Franklin Road just before 3 p.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot. 

A teenage boy was walking with a friend when a vehicle pulled up, someone stepped out, shot the teen, got back in the car and drove away. The 17-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Officer Genae Cook with IMPD said.

The friend who was walking with the victim was not injured and was speaking to detectives on Sunday afternoon, Cook said. 

No description of a possible vehicle was available on Sunday afternoon. Detectives were canvassing the scene and asking for anyone with information to contact police. 

UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, the victim was identified as Leandre Lane.

1 a.m. Sunday | Roosevelt Avenue 

A building in the 3600 block of Roosevelt Avenue, near Massachusetts Avenue and Sherman Drive, described by witnessed as a biker bar is where police found a woman shot dead around 1 a.m. Sunday. Another man injured in the shooting was taken to an area hospital, where he died. A third person was taken to an area hospital in serious but stable condition, while two other people showed up at hospitals, one critically injured, the other stable. 

UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, one victim was identified as 76-year-old John Boxley. A 42-year-old female victim has not been identified by family, according to the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

11:15 p.m. Saturday | Twin Oaks Drive

Police investigating a shot fired into an apartment just after 11:15 p.m. Saturday in the 7100 block of Twin Oaks Drive, near 34th Street and Shadeland Avenue, found a man with a gunshot wound lying on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives interviewed witnesses; police at the scene said the man was not connected to the apartment the shot had been fired into. 

UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 19-year-old Ezekiel Summers.

9:30 p.m. Saturday | Bellefontaine Street

Officers arriving in the 1700 block of Bellefontaine Street, just east of 17th Street and College Avenue, around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate several reports of shots fired found a man lying in the street with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and detectives were interviewing witnesses and asking for information about the shooting. 

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Theron Rowley.
