Reservoir being built to help with future water supply demand
FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — On Tuesday, Citizens Energy Group announced a plan to develop 88 acres into the largest water reservoir in Central Indiana since 1968. When complete in 2020, the new Citizens Reservoir will store 2.7 billion gallons of water, more than 40 percent of the storage capacity of Geist Reservoir.
“Citizens Reservoir is a cost effective and sustainable solution for providing Central Indiana the water supply it needs for continued population growth and economic development,” said Jeff Harrison, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “The new reservoir will also be a vital component to helping the region endure serious drought conditions like those that led to mandatory water use restrictions in 2012.”
The 230-foot deep limestone quarry, located along Olio Road and immediately adjacent to Geist Reservoir, will capture water that is now lost over the Geist Dam during periods of heavy rain. Following a detailed feasibility study, Citizens will acquire the quarry from Irving Materials, Inc (IMI) and will develop the quarry for water storage purposes by 2020.
“It’s exciting and gratifying to see our long-standing relationship with the water utility culminate in a project that will service future generations,” said Earl Brinker, President and CEO of IMI.
“Developing the quarry into a drinking water reservoir is a key step forward, ensuring Fishers and communities across Central Indiana have the water supply necessary to support a growing population and a vibrant economy,” said Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness.
Recent studies by Citizens Energy Group and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce indicate Central Indiana will need an additional 50 to 80 million gallons of water per day in order to meet the region’s growing demand over the next 25 years. Citizens has already addressed a portion of this need with new water supply facilities and system optimization projects. The new Citizens Reservoir will provide up to 25 million gallons per day of additional water that can be used during the summer months across the utility’s eight county service territory.
“I’ve participated in several central Indiana water studies in recent years and I can say, without hesitation, this project is needed for regional growth and is an extremely innovative and cost effective solution when compared to other long-term water supply options,” said Dr. Jack Wittman, Ph.D., Vice President and Principal Hydrogeoloist for INTERA. “This is great news for central Indiana.”
“It’s clear drought-prone areas, and specifically communities, struggle without sustainable water supplies,” said State Senator Jim Merrit. “I applaud Citizens’ innovative solution which provides central Indiana the water supplies it needs for growth and economic prosperity.”
“Citizens Reservoir is a great example of how local planning and development can lead to effective regional solutions for providing the water supply Indiana needs for future generations,” said State Senator Ed Charbonneau.
The Citizens Reservoir will not be for recreational use.
Jeff Willman, Vice President of the company’s water operations, said, “Given the fact that this reservoir can be drawn down at considerable depths. So for example this is 230 feet deep. We at some times may have to draw it down to 150 feet, 200 feet in depth and so it has to be separate and isolated for public safety purposes.”
The estimated cost of the Citizens Reservoir is estimated at $20 million. Citizens said they will pay for the project first and then regain the $20 million dollars in customers’ rates.
