10 most common snakes you may encounter in Indiana
by: Katie Cox
The Common Watersnake: Another species of snakes in Indiana that tend to be mis-identified. These snakes are the most common aquatic snake found in the state and can be found in any watery area, including ponds, lakes, swamps, streams and even backyard fishponds. They prefer warm, shallow water with plenty of rocks for basking in the sunlight. Watersnakes will generally dive into the water if they are approached, but like most animals they may act aggressive if they feel threatened or cornered. Watersnakes can come in many different color patterns as shown on the following two images. (Info from Indiana DNR / Photo credit: James Horton)
