Indiana’s largest tornado outbreaks on record

  • During an event known as the ‘Super Tornado Outbreak’, the second largest outbreak in history, a total of 148 tornadoes touched down across the country over a 24-hour period.
  • According to the National Weather Service, 22 tornadoes touched down across the state of Indiana during a storm system that struck this day.
  • 23 tornadoes touched down in Indiana between the night of March 31 and the early morning hours of April 1.
  • On the day of the 88th running of the Indianapolis 500, 24 tornadoes were recorded across the state of Indiana.
