May 30, 2004: On the day of the 88th running of the Indianapolis 500, 24 tornadoes were recorded across the state of Indiana. The most remembered one, known as the ‘race day tornado’, was an F-2 that touched down just miles from the packed Indianapolis Motor Speedway as fans were leaving the track. It was one of five tornadoes the storm over the Indianapolis metro area produced that day. Amazingly, no one was killed, but several people were injured during the storms, including several residents of a nursing home in Beech Grove that had its roof tore off.
