Case of whooping cough at Carmel High School

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – Parents of students at Carmel High School were alerted Monday morning of a confirmed case of pertussis, or whooping cough, at the school.

The letter from the Director of Student Services at Carmel Clay Schools explained some students and staff may have been exposed to whooping cough.

According to the letter, others may have been exposed either on the bus or in the classroom.

The alert explained some of the symptoms of pertussis:

  • similar to the common cold
  • low fever
  • cough that becomes worse
  • coughing fits develop
  • coughing that leads to vomiting or trouble catching a breath
