Bike to School Day returns to Indy for 3rd year

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – It feels like summer outside and that’s good news for kids taking part in this year’s National Walk/Bike to School Day in Indianapolis.

It’s the third time the event has come to the Circle City. The goal of the national event is to not only teach kids about bike safety but also to show parents there might be a different way to get their child to school. The annual event is also meant to promote a more healthy lifestyle and cleaner environment.

At School of Inquiry 84, fourth and fifth grade students are part of a pilot program to teach them about bike safety. The bike club is one of only three in the city of Indianapolis, and if it goes well, the program could be implemented in more schools over the next year or so. Last year, more than 180 kids participated – that’s about half of the School 84 population.

Parents, students and even some law enforcement are meeting at several locations throughout the city to help kids get to school on their bikes.

The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to safely bicycle or walk to school.
