IFD, IMPD investigating fire on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Two people were transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital early Monday morning, after a fire broke out in an apartment complex on the south side of Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was sent to the 7300 block of Creekbrook Driver around 12:03 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the basement. When they arrived on scene, they confirmed there was thick and heavy smoke coming from out of the basement of a condo.

A 24-year-old male was reported to have multiple burns across his body. He was transported to Eskenazi hospital in serious but stable condition. A 21-year-old female was also transported to Eskenazi, but is reported to be in good condition.

IFD said the scene was under control around 12:23 a.m.

There are six units in the building and only five are occupied. Residents said they smelled gas Sunday afternoon around 1. It prompted maintenance to turn off the furnace in the basement with the intent of calling for repair Monday morning.

One occupant said she went to bed on the third floor and had been asleep for several hours before the fire occurred. She described it as an explosion.

It is unclear what caused the fire to occur.

IFD and IMPD are investigating the fire. The incident is under investigation.
