INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man was in critical condition Friday after an early-morning fire destroyed the garage he was using as a residence, the Indianapolis Fire Department said.

Around 3:30 a.m., IFD crews were dispatched to a garage fire on South Belmont Avenue near Howard Street. That’s a neighborhood on the city’s southwest side a few blocks south of Rhodius Park.

Firefighters arrived and found a carport engulfed in flames.

Attached to the carport was a garage that had been turned into a residence, complete with a door and windows.

Once the carport fire was under control, firefighters went into the makeshift residence and found the man unconscious in a bedroom.

IFD says the man received CPR after being rescued. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

No firefighters were injured.

Crews at the scene told News 8 that the structure was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
