Holiday gathering turns tragic: Suspect arrested after Christmas mass shooting kills 1, injures 5

Mass shooting on Christmas leaves woman dead, 5 other adults hurt

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Christmas gathering turned deadly Wednesday afternoon when a shooting inside a northeast Indianapolis home left a woman dead, a man critically injured, and four others hurt.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the woman killed as 37-year-old Ana Paredes.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers responded just before 12:30 p.m. to a home in the 6400 block of Meadowlark Drive, located in the Devington neighborhood near 42nd Street and Arlington Avenue.

IMPD identified a person of interest, Andres Sanchez Garzon, 35, who was later arrested on a preliminary charge of murder. Garzon, who was not shot, was found hiding in nearby bushes and taken to a hospital with minor injuries before being taken into custody, according to a Thursday morning news release.

Police initially reported that five adults had been shot, but later announced that a sixth victim had walked into a hospital.

Officers arrived at the scene to find a woman shot outside the home. She and another man left the scene and sought treatment at a hospital. Both were reported in stable condition.

Inside the home, officers found four uninjured children, all under the age of 18, in the front living room. In a back room, they discovered a man and woman who had both been shot. The woman, identified as Paredes, later died at the hospital. The man remains in critical condition.

Later Wednesday, two additional men who had been shot arrived at local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately available.

IMPD said the holiday gathering involved family and friends. A disturbance during the event allegedly escalated into the shooting, according to police.

“This incident is tragic,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson during a news conference two hours after the shooting. “On Christmas Day, we have another shooting involving a family. We must do better to stop gun violence in our homes and on our streets.”

Police recovered a firearm inside the home. Neighbors described the house as a frequent site of parties that caused disturbances on the street. One neighbor expressed frustration and hoped the residents would move.

Following the shooting, individuals were seen carrying Christmas presents out of the home.

IMPD asks anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Larry Craciunoiu at 317-327-3475 or via email at larry.craciunoiu@indy.gov. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

The incident on Meadowlark Drive was not connected to a separate shooting that occurred around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 4400 block of North Kitley Avenue, located less than half a mile away.

Police say the incident on Meadowlark was not connected to a shooting that happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 4400 block of North Kitley Avenue. The two addresses are less than a half-mile apart.
