Local organization collecting bikes for those in need of transportation
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and Bicycle Garage Indy are teaming up to collect bikes for those in need.
It’s part of the Shifting Gears Program. The program was started in August 2006. Since then, nearly 4,000 bikes have been donated through Bicycle Garage Indy.
Currently, these are requests for more than 200 bikes.
The Shifting Gears Program is a partnership between Bicycle Garage Indy, the Indiana Department of Correction and Volunteers of America.
The bikes that are donated are refurbished by Shifting Gears Participants in the Indiana Department of Correction. Those bikes are then donated back to people in need of a mode of transportation through a variety of charities.
