World Food Championships’ Final Table comes to Indy
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This weekend, the biggest sporting event for foodies will be happening in Indianapolis.
The World Food Championships will showcase 10 of the best culinary athletes from around the world. They’ll compete at the Final Table tournament at Ivy Tech Culinary Center for the right to be crowned World Food Champion.
The 10 finalists beat out 1,400 cooks from 42 states and 15 countries.
The event’s eighth champion will be crowned Sunday. Organizers say the cooks will be put through the toughest competition to date. Each round, the chefs will be judged on some Hoosier favorites.
- Round 1: Best pork dish.
- Round 2: Expert duck dish.
- Final Round: Sugar cream pie.
“To be able to welcome the 10 food champions to Indianapolis and to the state of Indiana, to compete to be the World Food Champion and to collect $100,000 it doesn’t get any better than that,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said Friday. “It’s almost like the World Food Champion’s Final Table is all about celebrating food in Indiana.”
In the opening ceremonies, Crouch welcomed the contestants, none whom are from Indiana, with some Hoosier hospitality and a message before they put their skills to the test.
“Ladies and gentleman, start your food engines,” she said.
The judges for the competition will include some notable Indy chefs and food writers. The competition kicks off Saturday at Ivy Tech in the second floor ballroom. Only 100 will be allowed to watch in person because of social distance guidelines.
The event will also be filmed by the Cooking Channel for a reality show that will air in late September.
