1 arrested after shooting ‘indiscriminately’ into Carmel business; 1 man injured

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – A man was shot Wednesday morning in Carmel, according to the Carmel Police Department.

Around 4:15 a.m., officers were called to First Avenue Northwest near Main Street for several calls of gunshots in the area.

Once on the scene, officers found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound, inside a business at 110 W. Main St. That’s a building with retailers and apartments known as Sophia Square.

Police said a man was shot in the leg and was transported to the hospital. Police said his injuries are not life-threatening.

Following the shooting, police conducted an investigation and learned that a man, 25-year-old Moses Shoaga, of Indianapolis, was indiscriminately firing a gun into the building.

Shoaga was taken into custody. He faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.

Carmel police said there is no immediate danger to the public.

Tess Cox, of Carmel, daily goes to Anytime Fitness and says it’s a safe place. Cox says she got up Wednesday morning to go to the gym when she saw police lights and discovered that somebody had been shot.

“Very, very odd. I mean this is…. I go everyday and it’s safe and nothing is going on usually other than road construction,” Cox said.

Cox and her friend Denise Scheidler say shootings aren’t typical in downtown Carmel. “It just doesn’t happen. It’s really safe and you just never really worry about stuff like that,” Cox said.

Scheidler, also from Carmel, said, “We’re out walking now and we feel hundred percent safe. It’s not going to be an ongoing concern.”

Cox says what happened doesn’t scare her and that she’ll keep going back.
