BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH)  — Saturday’s storms destroyed portions of Beech Grove High School, the nearby Beech Meadow apartment complex and businesses in the area, leaving many residents to wake up Sunday morning ready to assess the damage. 

Others suffered property damage so bad, they were coming back to their homes for the first time since Saturday night. 

The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross had a shelter set up in the Hornet Park Community Center within hours after the storm hit. 

Beech Meadow apartment resident, Jeremiah Konubah, told News 8 he brought his family to the shelter around 10 p.m. Saturday. 

“The police and fire service came and advised us that we have to leave the building because our roof came off, it was so terrible,” said Konubah. 

Aside from damage, the storm canceled Sunday’s “Grand Prix of Beech Grove” charity go-kart race hosted by former IndyCar driver Sarah Fisher. 

When the storm hit Saturday evening, volunteers and organizers were setting up for the event at Beech Grove High School. 

Some volunteers told News 8 they took shelter under go-kart trailers to stay away from flying branches. 

The National Weather Service has made a preliminary determination that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Beech Grove Saturday night. Investigators are still studying the damage. 

At a press conference Sunday morning, Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley thanked all emergency first responders and confirmed no injuries from the storm. 

As cleanup efforts begin, he advised Beech Grove residents to bring tree limbs and branches to the curb for pick up.

Mayor Buckley also warned those looking for repair contractors to be aware of contractor fraud. 

He suggested calling Beech Grove City Hall to ensure any hired contractors are valid businesses.
