Iconic former mayor of Columbus dies at 86

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – A pioneering former mayor of Columbus, Indiana has died.

Former Mayor Robert Stewart died Sunday morning at the age of 86, 24-Hour News 8’s news partners at The Republic report.

Stewart was elected mayor of Columbus in 1984 and served until 1995. As mayor, he attracted new companies to Columbus and helped revitalize the city’s downtown.

Current Mayor Kristen Brown says the city will celebrate Stewart’s life Friday at 1 p.m. at Columbus City Hall.
