INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — At least one person is dead following a multivehicle crash, including an ambulance, on Indianapolis’ northwest side early Sunday morning, police say.

The name or age of the person hasn’t been shared yet.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the 5500 block of Michigan Road on a report of a possible crash involving multiple vehicles around 2 a.m.

That area is by a few stores, fast food restaurants, and gas stations, near the intersection of Michigan Road and Kessler Boulevard West Drive.

Investigators say that an ambulance was traveling southbound on Michigan Road when a red Chevy Silverado lost control and crossed the center line into the path of the ambulance.

The ambulance hit the truck on the passenger side. A blue Nissan SUV was hit in the aftermath of the crash.

The passenger of the Silverado was ejected from the truck and died at the scene. The driver of the ambulance, Silverado, and two passengers in the ambulance were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Police say the occupants of the Nissan fled the scene on foot.

The other drivers involved also submitted to a blood draw, which is standard procedure in Indiana when there is a fatal crash.

Traffic in the area was closed for several hours while investigators and clean-up crews were on the scene.
