New classes at DCHS prepping students for future tech careers
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Educators at Decatur Central High School on the southwest side of Indianapolis are working to prepare their students for future jobs in technology.
This year, the school has added a couple new classes and it is giving students a chance to dive into computer science and engineering.
The first one is AP Computer Science Principles. Students are learning about different things about computers. One of the things they are learning is how computers communicate.
Students are learning about binary and hexadecimal and creating artwork by using pixels.
“We’re using hexidecimal number system to create images pixel by pixel. Hexidecimal is a number system that goes zero through nine, A through F,” said sophomore Roshan Sundar.
“It’s just a really good sampler course to get them started with a lot of career pathways that would happen after that,” said teacher Tyler Shelton.
Educators hope new classes like this will prep students for the future.
“Indianapolis is like one of the top five or six cities in the nation for blossoming careers in computer science, so with 25,000 or so jobs coming to Indy in the next 10 years, this will give students a head start on their own CS related career down the road,” Shelton added.
Another class that has been added this year is Engineering and Automation. Prior to this year, the school only had an Engineering Club. This new class will allow students in-class instruction on how to plan, build and program robots.
“The world is evolving a lot into more technology and if we can build these simple robots now imagine what we can do in the future,” said Savanna Preston.
