Southern Indiana church looking to donate unique gift

BRAZIL, Ind. (WTHI) – First Christian Church in Brazil, IN is remodeling its entire sanctuary. But before they start demolition, they’re looking to give back to local organizations.

For 28 years, this sanctuary has been the view for Pastor Chris Gregg. He’s looked at the same crosses, tangled wires and rows of pews.

“People are pretty attached to their pew believe it or not,” said Gregg.

Although the people sitting in the pews each Sunday won’t change, this sanctuary is about to get a full renovation.

New lights, sound systems, chairs and paint are just a few on the list.

“We try to give more than we get,” said Gregg.

But as they receive their new gift, the church is looking to give one back.

“We reach out to our community because we want to be good neighbors and draw them home to a place where they feel supported and loved in a faith-based community,” said Gregg.

Pastor Gregg says they want to donate all their pews to another church or charity in need. On January 29, church volunteers will remove each and every one.

“Our project manager says he hasn’t put pews in a church for over 15 years,” said Gregg.

They’ll spend hours hammering away at the rows of memories, hoping the next organization can carry on the same generosity as First Christian Church.

“These pews are where people spend their spiritual lives and they have holy moments, or defining moments,” said Gregg.

So as Pastor Gregg prepares his holiday sermon, he’s reminding the members it’s not about the church, but the people who fill it.

“We want this to feel like home,” said Gregg.
