Suspect flees after police chase ends in pond
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police say they have a person in custody in connection to an early morning chase in a stolen truck that ended in an Indianapolis pond.
According to police, it began at a gas station on Lynhurst Drive near Minnesota on the southwest side of the city. Police say a man left his truck running while he went into a convenience store and while he was inside, someone stole the running vehicle.
Investigators say they spotted the truck quickly and followed it. They say the chase was not high speed, but it did last for about five miles. The pursuit ended when the man drove the vehicle into a pond on Gatwick Drive near Kentucky Avenue and High School Road.
Officials at the scene say the vehicle was 15 feet under water when firefighters arrived to help pull it out.
The suspect got away, but police say he left his pants, shoes and cell phone behind. It’s unclear if the person police had in custody Friday morning was that man or not.
