10 most common snakes you may encounter in Indiana
by: Katie Cox
Copperhead: Copperheads are the most common venomous snake in the state of Indiana, however you are more likely to come across almost any of the other snakes we've listed than you are a copperhead. Copperheads are generally brown with dark mahogany bands as adults, although some have a slight gray coloration. Nearly all Copperheads have the same shape and pattern with thin dark bands on top and larger blotches on the side. They're often described as looking like an hourglass if you view them from above and a Hershey kiss if you view them from the side. While they do have a venomous bite, copperheads don't tend to attack unless provoked and spend most of their time blending in quietly with their surroundings. We've added them to our list of "common snakes" because they are the only venomous snake found in Indiana that isn't on the State Endangered list.
