Bar Crawl on Mass Ave commemorating Cold War

Get a lesson in history, with “beer in hand!” This year’s Cold War-themed Indy bar crawl comes to Indianapolis on June 21 and 22, pairing adult beverages with historic tales (and re-enactments) of the city and its people.

Here’s how it works:Indiana Humanities presents Duck & Cover: A Historic Bar Crawl through Cold War Indianapolis

Participants will start and end at the IndyFringe Theatre and journey to four different locations to learn about the brave men and women whose vigilance kept Indianapolis “safe” from the Red Menace, and hear about the spies and Communist sympathizers that tried to infiltrate the heartland.

Indiana Humanities spends several months working with the Indiana Historical Society to conduct archival research and interviews in order to develop the vignettes and characters -played by Indiana Historical Society actors. This year’s stops are all based on real events and include a re-enactment of the first meeting of the Indiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and a retirement party for a long-time employee of the Eastside’s Naval Avionics Factory, which produced classified technology for the federal government after World War II.

When: Tuesday, June 21 and Wednesday, June 22, 6 – 9 p.m.

Where: Mass Ave Cultural District. Locations include IndyFringe Theatre, Union 50 and St. Mary’s Church*
