Reflection on USS Indianapolis this weekend at War Memorial

It’s the story of a man who will be celebrating his uncle this weekend. But this uncle is no ordinary man. Michael Emery lives in Boston and will be flying to Indianapolis on Friday to honor his uncle, who was one of the fallen veterans aboard the USS Indianapolis on July 30th, 1945.

He will be at the Indiana War Memorial most of the day on Saturday to answer questions from passerby’s about the USS Indianapolis, as well as to answer any questions about his uncle.

Emery will be wearing his uncle’s tribute shirt with his photo on it, and is bringing his three ring binder that contains photos of Uncle Bill, letters from the ship, photos of the USS Indianapolis from 1932-1945, typed and handwritten letters from Captain McVay to his grandfather, Lieutenant Commander John C. Emery, William Friend Emery’s father, as well as written correspondence of several of his grandfather’s Naval colleagues who he sent out to the survivors hospitals in search of any information about his missing son.

Emery says his uncle was a real person with hopes and dreams, but who gave the ultimate sacrifice with 879 of his shipmates for the freedoms our country has today.

Today on Indy Style, J. Stewart Goodwin, Executive Director, Indiana War Memorials Commission, shares this incredible story.
